I have been running websites since 1999 and I have had my fair share of Website hosting companies to deal with.
I can assure you, not all of my encounters were good ones, but I did find a few gems that I really like.
Cheap Website Hosting
As most website owners and site builders, I was looking for cheap website hosting when I started.
And the ones I found did the job well. Until I wanted more for my sites, more speed, more space and higher technical software versions that are run on the web server.
Thing is, with these cheap hosting companies is that they are loading a lot of websites onto one server. Which makes sense from an economic perspective. The more users on one server, the higher their profit will be.
For you and me as website owners, it's a different ballgame. We don't want to share server resources, with one bad coded website on the same server it could potentially slow our site response down to an unacceptable level.
So nowadays I still look for a website hosting that is not a top of the line hosting company like wpengine.com but a bit more in an affordable price range.
Don't get me wrong, if you have the money, go for wpengine.com you won't get much better then that for a high-end WordPress website.
Affordable WordPress Website Hosting
What I am looking for now, are hosting companies that are technically up-to-date. So I want to be able to have PHP 7 instead of PHP 5.6.
So I want more than the basic WordPress Requirements:
- PHP 7.1 or greater
- MySQL 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB 10.0 or greater
- The mod_rewrite Apache module
- HTTPS support
I don't want overloaded servers and I want new innovative options like Let's Encrypt to use https:// instead of http://
And if possible, a WordPress optimized server package on SSD Hard Drives and really good back-ups.
I know, it's a log to ask, but with Siteground.com I did get it all and more…
Even the support is top notch, they were able to quickly help me out with one of the Let's Encrypt certificates I managed to screw up.
Besides my Siteground.com I do have my Greengeeks.com account which also works fantastic, even after a couple of years. Greengeeks.com also keeps their servers up-to-date and provide the speed I need.
